How We Did It - Engagement Invite Design

(0 votes)

Below is a walkthrough of how we created one of our recent invitation card compositions - it may serve to inspire you in your latest project.

1. Created a vector temple arch design in Adobe Illustrator which we bought into Adobe Photoshop as a smart vector object. The title font and the grunge background were also chosen at this point as per the client's brief:

2. The arch was very central and in order to create more character, we increased the size of the arch and moved it toward the right off-the-page:

3. Next we added another Indian-influenced feature - a thick henna border on the right:

4. Our client provided us a beautiful colour picture of Radha and Krishna - which was very vivid, and therefore became too dominant in this composition. Thus, by using blending modes in Photoshop, we made this picture more in-keeping with the tonal range of the design as follows:

5. Continuing with the Henna theme, we added a thin Henaa strip just above the title:

6. Our client was keen on including an exquisite peacock graphic in the composition:

7. We felt the peacock was too small and was getting lost - so we made the him bigger and added a white backing behind him. To add more depth to the composition, we made the peacock appear to perch itself atop the left side of the arch, and it's plume appeared to hang down and behind an arch pillar:

8. At this point, the arch was starting to look very flat - so we added an inner shadow, which further increased the sense of depth:

9. We then thought that the arch was too overpowering now, so we softened the arch shadow by using a texture over it:

10. Here the composition was not balanced due to the space in the top left corner, so we added a square frame and a swirl vector there. Our client also wanted the use of a special sankrit verse from a text called Srimad Bhagavatam used in the background:

11. We added a cartouche swirl vector to balance out the space to the left of the title:

12. The final touches we made to bring this design to its conclusion was to round-off the corner of the top left frame, and then to repeat the special sanskrit verse to fill the background - this is the finished design:

Please overlook the changing title and title background colour that can been seen throughout this walkthrough!
