The Rule of Thirds
We all have our favorite photos - however what makes a good composition? Is it something that one can learn?"The Rule of Thirds" is a simple compositional rule of thumb used in all visual arts (photography, painting and design).
The rule states that an image should be imagined as divided into 9 equal parts by 2 equally-spaced horizontal lines and 2 equally-spaced vertical lines (see opposite), and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.
Proponents of the technique claim that aligning a subject with these points creates more tension, energy and interest in the composition rather than simply centering the subject would (which this rule discourages).
Have fun!
